The municipality of Ischia extends along the north-eastern coast of the island. from the hills of S.Alessandro to the Aragonese Castle. Its surface is about 9 sq km and has a population of around 16,000 inhabitants. The average altitude is 70 meters. The territory is divided into two main toponyms: Ischia Porto, formerly called Villa dei Bagni for the presence of several spas, and Ischia Ponte, the ancient village of Celsa. Other districts are: S. Michele, S. Antuono, Campagnano, S. Alessandro, S.Ciro. The name of Ischia has been extended to the whole municipality in recent times,
because in ancient times the “City of Ischia” was made up of the so-called “Aragonese Castle”, where the governor of the island and the bishop of the diocese were based. A delightful and lively town, it is today the true center of the island.
